Many poets write strong individual poems, but a children’s poetry collection asks for something more: a clear book idea, a strong emotional throughline, and a shape that helps the poems belong together.
In this small-group workshop, Georgia Heard will begin with a brief craft talk on what makes a poetry collection feel whole—how poems gather around an idea, how a manuscript moves, and how a collection begins to feel like a book.
Then editor Rebecca M. Davis will join us for focused editorial feedback on each participant’s collection-in-progress. Participants will submit materials in advance, and Rebecca will respond to the larger shape and promise of each collection, with suggestions for deepening, clarifying, and strengthening the manuscript. She’ll also share insight into how an editor might see the collection and how it may fit within the current children’s book market.
This will not be a line-by-line critique, but a thoughtful editorial response to help you see your collection more clearly.
