It’s the words that sing, they soar…
—Pablo Neruda

Words are at the heart of every poem. They shimmer. They surprise us. They carry sound, texture, rhythm, image, and feeling. Sometimes one fresh verb or unexpected noun can change everything. And sometimes words surprise us when they bump up against one another in a new way.

In this workshop, we’ll play with the power of words: the mouthfeel of language, the music of words, concrete details, surprising verbs and nouns, invented words, “wild” words, ambitious words that we want to say out loud.

I’m delighted that Irene Latham will join us for part of the evening. Irene will share from her new book Come In! Come In! Wordspinners to Welcome You Home and talk about inventing words, the “nature” of words, and why children’s poems can hold playful, surprising, ambitious language. She’ll also lead us in a playful writing invitation inspired by her new form.

Together, we’ll read poems, talk about language, and try exercises to help us find fresher, livelier, more surprising words for our own poems.

Come ready to savor words, play with words, and bring new energy back to your poems.
